At some point in our lives, we all likely think about what we would do if we had a do-over opportunity. I’m no exception.
My husband and I recently returned from a glorious trip to Tuscany. In this past year, I have also been fortunate to visit Ireland and revisit the Kingdom of Jordan.
These trips have spurred my thinking about what I might attempt if given a do-over. Although I have no specific job in mind, I keep thinking about a career with the Foreign Service. When I was a young woman, I knew of no one who had this type of job, and no one ever spoke to me about international opportunities – except being a stewardess (as they were referred to then).
In my fortunate career, I have experienced work and life in other cultures. What I have experienced and loved are the common elements that connect humanity, and the history that can both stabilize and un-stabilize communities. Remaining open to experience without judgment can unlock critical thinking channels in our brains. Today, with the lines receded, it becomes especially relevant to have leaders who are curious about world history, want to understand the context and are courageous in moving forward tricky conversations.
That’s my do-over desire – a career working in international diplomacy. Since that isn’t going to happen in this lifetime, let me leave this blog with my wish for younger generations. Be curious about the world; Be open to differences; Cultivate understanding; Travel – both to glamorous and unglamorous places; and be kind.
I saw this sign in our favorite café in Siena and the simplicity of the message resonates with me daily.
Today is a good day
