Assumptions!

  • Jan Bouch
  • March 9, 2020
Assumptions! We all have them and frequently rely on them to make quick decisions. These decisions may not always be correct or accurate, depending on our operating assumptions. Our first contact is through our bio-reactions – quick judgements made within .07 seconds. Where protection is needed, this is to trust your gut reaction – friend or foe? Assumptions, in this instance, can serve us well. Assumptions are also able to quickly elevate us to conclusions that are no longer influenced by other perspectives. For example, think back to the election of 2016. I’m curious how many of you made your decision to vote or not vote on the assumption that Hilary Clinton was a shoo-in? There is no judgment here, just curiosity. On the other side of the coin, I’m curious how many individual’s voted because of fear that Hilary would win the election. Either way, looking back I’m confident that at least some of us made our voting decision based on the assumption we were holding at the time. As Dr. Judith Glaser (deceased) puts forth in her Conversational Intelligence research, we move up the ladder of conclusions quickly. We label or interactions as “feel good” or “feel bad.” As we continue up the ladder, we put words to our feelings – we make meaning of our interaction. From here, we work to make our meaning align with our beliefs. And finally, when we have reached “conclusions.” we may shut out other points of view. I find that working with a coach is an essential step in deconstructing bio triggered assumptions. When we can hit the pause button and work to learn how we are thinking and acting relative to our experience, then, and only then, can we challenge our current way of thinking and behaving. Your challenge - in the next week or so, look for opportuities to stop and examine your assumptions and how they are influencing you.
