So much of our time can be caught up in the mundane - just staying current on daily living with work and chores can be enough. My husband Steve and I decided to break our routine and head to Washington D.C. for the march. We were two among thousands of people who came out to protect our democracy.
Just sitting on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial watching people use their voice was awe-inspiring. The march was peaceful with marchers of all ages, race, and gender. I have since been designing strategies to stay actively involved and not let this awe-inspiring feeling pass without action.
As if I wasn’t awe-inspired enough, in the boarding area waiting to board the flight home, I sat in the seat next to Bob Woodward. Yes, that Bob Woodward, author and investigative journalist with The Washington Post. I was filled with reverential respect for this man who helped save our democracy by bringing down the corrupt Nixon Presidency. Bob Woodward has a calling. I am star struck with the knowledge that he is still working his passion for getting to the truth. Truth, in these times of “fake news.”
I’m still savoring the moment I told Bob Woodward that he is one of my heroes. He politely thanked me and moved on with his dogged spirit. My appreciation for his stalwart body of work is not lost on the current presidency. Getting to the truth is not a review of tweets: it is so much more. It is having the desire and tenacity to peel the onion, slowly and carefully, until the truth reveals itself. Our Congressional leaders owe us this level of appreciation and consideration.
I’m curious. Who or what has generated awe for you recently?
